The powerful image of Monica’s name tagged on the graffitied-Chicago wall was emotional for fans, but did you know that spray paint is actually illegal in Chicago? It’s not that the Gallaghers would care about a law like that, but it does balance out Carl’s new “military-school” persona. Could Monica be the reason that Frank became the way he is? Then again, there’s been plenty of proof throughout the series that Frank was always corrupt, especially when you consider what we know about his mother, brother Patrick, and eldest daughter Sammi. We learned that Frank was a college student with an internship when Monica literally fell (more like jumped through a car window) into his life, and that Frank nobly helped her get away from a man who had been assaulting her.
Maybe because we know more about Frank’s life than Monica’s, we just assumed that Frank has always been a drunken excuse of a father, but fans got a glimmer of backstory tonight that shed light on how Frank became… Frank. When Carl, Debbie and Frank are going through Monica’s stuff in the living room, an episode of Batman Beyond: Return Of The Joke r is playing on the television in the background. It may be a coincidence, but we’re going to choose to believe that this was a nod to Cameron Monaghan (Ian Gallagher), who plays the Joker on Fox’s Gotham. Even though Fiona blames much of her failures in life on her mother, the message is that all of these negative experiences will help Fiona define her own future, something that’s particularly true in Season 7. Rather, every action and event that happens to a person gives him or her experience, which leads to nirvana and understanding. The message of Hesse’s Siddhartha is that the individual events in one’s life are meaningless when considered by themselves, but that nothing in a person’s life is a distraction.
